European director Schmidt detests the USA and American cinema: he prefers his life as an “impoverished poet” in an unheated room to any kind of Hollywood glamour. Overcome by paranoia, Schmidt meets his American double, director Smith, who’s supposed to entice him to sell his soul in return for a box-office hit.
